Some of us believe that a centralized church of 1.3 billion people is a material force. So we should be able to study and discuss it without people assuming that we believe any of its tenets or defend its past history. That's been a problem on this list with one subscriber filing a formal complaint against me for condoning pedophilia. It was dramatic. Others want to dole out lectures on the Catholic Church and chattel slavery. I am sure an idealist can find all sorts of institutions and beliefs that are phenotypical points of similarity. The Roman Catholic church is only "just like" the Stalin-led USSR of a certain period if you limit yourself to what things look like rather than what things are.
