Since Charles asked, I would enjoy the sea and the sunshine. My days of belonging to fringe organizations festering on the sidelines are over. I still follow politics closely and attend the occasional demonstration - most recently with the Palestine contingent at the local Pride parade. Otherwise my activity is confined to email exchanges with veteran leftists on Marxmail and elsewhere. I suspect the same is true of Charles and many others on the list. At this stage, I’ve been especially interested in looking back and drawing a balance sheet of what I learned from more than six decades of political activity. Contrary to my early hopes and the hopes and anticipation of four or five generations of leftists preceding my own, capitalism is still around and the respective projects of both the reformist nor revolutionary wings of the workers’ movement have each failed in their own way. With the advent of job-destroying AI and robotics, the prospects for a revival of a working class movement with the power to shut down production and to contend for political power don’t look promising.
