I witnessed the transition from the Spoons to what followed. It is an
overstatement to say Proyect banned *everyone* he disagreed with.

I would estimate that at least 80 percent of the people Proyect banned were
either unable or unwilling to participate in the listserv in a productive way.
So--for these 80 percent--Proyect was simply defending the signal-to-noise
ratio of the list.

What about the remaining 10 or 20 percent? Those were people who argued, in an
articulate way, that the main problem in the radical left comes from the right
(ie: reformism and social democracy) -- rather than from the left (ie:
sectarianism and cultism). Proyect had blind spots concerning radical
politics, and sometimes was unable to distinguish between solid and articulate
criticism of the influence of social democratic politics, ideology and methods
-- and trolling.

I was active on the list (on and off) over the years and had a number of
run-ins with Proyect. I did everything possible to respect the rules of the
listserv and the people on it. Proyect eventually banned me. When I emailed
him for an explanation, he only said that my activity was not consistent with
the purpose of the list.

Proyect may have been somewhat "unhinged" in the early days--but this was
greatly outweighed by the simple fact that he was a brilliant writer. There is
no other way to put it. Proyect could explain complicated matters in a way
that made sense and was also entertaining and funny. He did this again and
again and again. This brought out the best in everyone and was, without a
doubt, the main attraction of the listserv.
