It's actually worse than that. After all the old Bolsheviks had been removed from positions of authority, if not expelled, the CPSU held the so called "Congress of Victors" in which achievements of the early 1930s were celebrated. The participants were members of Stalin's own victorious faction. Ultimately the majority of those who attended that Congress were purged as well.
