1. The general elections in Brazil are dominated by the polarisation
between the government of President Lula and the right-wing opposition
around former President Bolsonaro. The Lula government is a popular
front, i.e. a coalition between the Workers Party (PT) and other
reformist forces (PSOL, the Stalinist PCdoB, etc.) with open bourgeois
forces, personified in Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, a figure with
close relations with business and finances. This popular front has been
in power since 2003, with the interruption of the years 2016-22, and ran
the country in the interest of Brazil’s capitalists. Flávio Bolsonaro
stands for a rabid chauvinist and authoritarian policy as his father
demonstrated when he was in power in 2018-22.
