John, You're right about the Supreme Court, and I was wrong. Your piece said it was very possible some of the Trump justices would rule against the order. I attributed the opposite prediction to you. That's the kind of error I was faulting in your article, which makes it worse, and I apologize.
On Missouri, "runs the other way" was too strong. Your sequence is correct: Kavanaugh blocked the 2025 map after the primaries had been run on it. My point was narrower. On September 10 the full court lifted Judge Clark's order with no noted dissents, and Hoskins told county officials to use the 2022 map. Which map governs November was settled four days before your piece ran. What hasn't been settled is the status of Onder, Brattin, and the other nominees who won primaries in districts that no longer exist. That's real disorder, just smaller than "up in the air." I didn't skip the other steps. I said the clerk scenario deserves more attention than anyone on the left has given it, and I'd say the same about Lutnick and the voting machines. On Reconstruction, I'll try to be less erudite and more direct. The Redeemer regimes were built by a regional propertied class retaking its own state governments once federal troops withdrew. What you describe is a federal executive sending its own agencies against state officials, many of them Republicans, who are refusing to go along. I think that difference tells us where pressure can be applied between now and January 3, and who might be pulled away from Trump when it counts. ICE in Minneapolis is a warning I take seriously.
