Thanks to Calle Dybedahl and Raphael Kraus for responding - you shined a light
in a dark place!  I had to rebuild subversion after updating swig and apache2
(I'm on Redhat, which of course runs everything several versions
out-of-date...), but now the perl bindings are working and everything is in
order.  As you said, Calle, it had nothing to do with mason after all.
