Could you provide proof link that will show this media type is old or deprecated.
But there is no reason to use them that I can imagine. The user agents don't do anything with them as far as I am aware.
At least firefox will not parse invalid application-xhtml+xml, sure other browsers will do the same. This means it will not apply any magic and will work faster.
