It doesn't appear to be a hardware error because I can access the internal
ftp server without problem. ALso, the port forwarding works OK to the
internal mail server -
I'm going to try upgrading to RH 6.2, kernel 2.2.16 and a later version of
IPchains (1.3.9-5)

maybe it's a hardware error. try replacing some interface cards
and see what happens.
