I have been using masquerading on RedHat 6.x and I have some wierd
problems if the machine on a local network is running Linux.
Basically only the first packet to anywhere gets through, after that my
masq machine sends the box that I'm on a host redirect telling it that
the new nexthop is the masq machine's gateway (eg one of the cable
companies computers) this new nexthop is then cached and no more packets
destined for whatever site I'm trying to get to will get through. I have
temporarily fixed this by adding a host entry into the routing table
saying that the gateway for my cable modem's gateway is the masq box.
Every now and then I'll also get a redirect host from my masq box
telling me that my gateway is the computer I'm sitting at, which of
course causes lots of problems, and setting a route saying that in order
to talk to myself I need to talk to the masq box causes more problems
than it solves.
I am not running routed or gated or anything like that on any of the
machines. The wierd thing is that this only happens when running Linux,
when running windoze on the same machine I have to problems (probably
because windows is ignoring those packets and just sending everything to
the gateway). I may have had similar problems while running BeOS but I
don't have the necessary skills to diagnose the problem under that OS.
Any help would be appreciated.
Robin
