On trying to setup masq in the linux box, have you checked that the mtu on
both interfaces is the same.
I couldn't get it to work until I manually set the correct mtu

I have ethernet on my inside network and slip connection on my linux to
the internet.
I connected using dip and once connected I typed
ifconfig sl0 mtu 1500
to set the same mtu on both interfaces and it worked perfectly.
