I've spent weeks on this now screwing around and editing everything in
sight. I'm dropping back and punting. Rather than ask vague questions
about things that I don't understand, and can't provide the relevant data
on, I'm going to make a fresh install of Red Hat 7.2, workstation mode, and
ask what should be straight forward questions that someone, somewhere,
should be able to answer easily enough:

Has anyone else gotten IP MASQ'ing working with Red Hat 7.2?
What do I need to configure now to get IP Masquerade working with this
linux box, and one lone Win98 machine?
What are the best sources of cookbook steps to follow for the new 2.4
kernel in RH 7.2?
Does the kernel in the Red Hat 7.2 distribution need to be recompiled?
Can I get configuration files from someone with nearly the same setup?
Is it necessary to setup routing tables? My previous attempts to do this
all resulted in a "Netmask doesn't match IP address" error. I'm using the
192.168.0.X addresses, and 255.255.255.0 netmask.

I'm installing linux on an old IBM PC350 with a freshly flash upgraded
BIOS. I have two Netgear FA310TX PCI cards, and a 3Com Etherlink
3C900B-TPO PCI card. The drivers linux gives them seem to be correct
(tulip for the Netgear and some 3Cx driver for the 3Com). The arrangement
of the cards between the two computers doesn't seem to help matters, and
they all receive the Road Runner signal, on both computers, just fine. I'm
connecting the two computers with a crossover cable. (And, BTW, the
necessity of having a hub or a crossover cable should really be mentioned
in the IP MASQ Howto.) I've read the "Linux Networking HOWTO", and the "IP
Masquerade HOWTO" V2.00.1123, neither of which provide a clear cut set of
instructions for the new Red Hat distribution using
IPtables. Interpretation and guess work are necessary. Setting up Win98
to be the internal machine seems straight forward enough, but when I've
done my best to follow the directions for configuring both the linux box
and the Win98 machine I can't get a ping from either one.

While starting the new installation just now I left the primary DNS setting
on the default 192.168.0.1, the MASQ'ed PC's eth1 (internal network)
address. Is this correct? DHCP, pump, route, and gated had to be
manually selected for installation, something I hadn't noticed in my first
two installs, though DHCP seemed to have been working fine with the Road
Runner connection. I don't know what's going on. Are there any other
components whose presence I should verify?

My present best guess is that I screwed something up with my previous
installations and tinkering. Any suggestions or pointers will be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike Holloway
