Hi,
I set up the IP Masquerading using IPTABLES 1.2.4 and
kernel 2.4.9 on a RedHat 7.2 distribution.

I tried with the rc.firewall-2.4 script found in the
Ip Masquerading HOWTO and also tried
Jamin Collins' script
(http://heimdall.asgardsrealm.net/linux/firewall/)

Both work as long as I am active on the linux box.
However after about a minute of not 'using' the Linux
Box (I can be surfing web on a windows client)
Masquerading stops. If I go on the linux box and run
a simple command (i.e. ls, ping, ...) masquerading is
reactivated. By the way when everything is stoped I
can't ping my linux gateway anymore.

Someone suggested me on comp.os.linux.networking that
the autoclean could be set for some iptables modules.
I tried to load all the modules manually in the script
to avoid them to be autocleaned but it didn't arrange
the problem.

I'm suspecting that the problem is not related to
iptables but rather to some feature that I am not
aware off that desactivate some functions of the
system (or network interfaces) after a certain time.

Also I saw this in the 'Masquerading Made Simple
HOWTO':
---------
The connection keeps dropping!

 - First, do you have demand dialing? Is it just doing
what it is supposed to? Check /etc/ppp/peers/provider,
and make sure your dial up works fine before
attempting masq'ing.

 - Secondly, if not, then perhaps, like me, something
is going weird, and you need to fall back to Linux
2.4.3 and see if that works instead.. dunno why.
----------

Anybody knows anything more about that?

Thanks if anyone can help me

Olivier
I can send my rc.firewall script if necessary but it
is essentially the one form the HOWTO (i.e.
rc.firewall-2.4 the basic one provided for testing)
and the script doesn't seems to be the source of the
problem since I tried 2 different ones.
