I apologize if this email is getting sent
twice.
Hi,
I have an IP Masq setup using
RedHat 9, and everything works fine from the internal network (www, ping, ftp,
etc) except that mail is not sending via outlook. I can receive email just fine.
The following is the setup that I have: My linux box has two nics, it gets an internet
connection via an ADSL connection. So, ppp0 is the internet. eth0 is the local
network, which it has an IP of 192.168.0.1. This is connected directly to a
switch, (which is 192.168.0.2). The rest of the computers connect to the switch
have an IP of 192.168.1.xxx, which is assigned via DHCP. My
kernel version is 2.4.20-8 and
iptables v1.2.7.
Because I am using SBC Yahoo DSL, I connect to smtp.sbcglobal.yahoo.com for
sending email. I login to the smtp server and I can send email
anywhere/everywhere. This works fine except for when I'm behind the firewall.
Outlook says the connection has timed out waiting for a response from the SMTP
server, but I can telnet to the connection from behind the
firewall and logs in and the mail sends just fine! It seems to be an
issue with outlook and the firewall.
I
installed oidentd and I confirmed that's working ok. I enabled debugging and I
do see the requests ident when they come in. It seems however that when I
connect via smtp.sbcglobal.yahoo.com 25 either via telnet or outlook, it isn't
ever looking for identd from the local machine. So, that's not the
problem.
The only way I have gotten things to work is to use 192.168.0.1 (eth0 on the
firewall) as my smtp server. My firewall then sends the email. Because I travel
a lot, I am not always behind the firewall, so this is not an acceptable
solution.
I've been searching google groups and the internet for 2 days looking for ways
to fix this problem and I'm not coming up with much.
Thanks,
Jason
