The cable operator in my area has just begun to offer cable modem access.
However, until this fall, they only support what they call one-way cable
access.

Until they offer two-way access, to use their service you have to dial in on
a telephone modem for outgoing traffic and the cable modem returns with the
incoming traffic.

The setup they have gives you a dynamic address assigned via ppp for modem
access and the cable modem uses an static address of 10.0.0.1. I guess that
the incoming traffic gets routed to the appropriate cable modem via a
transport-level protocol on the cable.

Using a conventional modem-based ISP, I have been using ipchains and the
2.2.2 kernel to share my modem with the machines on my local network. I was
wondering if it would be possible to do the same thing with the split
configuration that the cable company is using.
