It's not hanging forever; it is trying to send out DNS requests. 
Whenever you are troubleshooting a network, the "-n" option on mosts
commands is your best friend.

"route -n", "netstat -n", "ipchains -L -n", etc.

Diald uses a route through a "pseudo-slip" interface, right?  If so,
shouldn't it be removing that route and replacing it with a default
route through the ppp interface that just came up?  I dunno.

Perhaps your IP Masq firewall stuff is getting in the way when it gets
configured in /ec/ppp/ip-up?  Or is this a masq question at all?  You do
know what mailing list this is, right?  ;)
