You do not say what IP addresses you are using in diald. Most of the
documentation uses 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 but this gave the same
problems you are having with route. I changed mine to 192.168.1.1 (eth0 on
my system) and 0.0.0.0.

This has cured the route problem and has given me more speed.

I can only assume that the local address (162.168.1.1) is recognised by
DNS/hosts and allows route to complete it's output. I had some problems
with loading the bsd_comp (or what ever) module which caused ipfwadm
(2.0.35 kernel) to block all connection from the machine attached to the
masq box (lagre network 8-) ).
