Maurice,

I've been running into the same problem with my Realtek 8139 ethernet (mine
is built into my motherboard).

You should check out the following website:

http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux

and specifically:

http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/rtl8139.html

has info on how these cards can be prone to timeout errors and in recent
versions of this driver he has attempted to address the same:

...

v1.05 of 2/25/99
Fixed a broken loop that could lock up the machine during some transmit
timeouts. (Li Dekai, mail.xanet.edu.cn)
Added link change support in the interrupt handler.

v1.06 of 3/16/99
Fixed a index roll-over bug that occurs when 2^32-1 packets are transmitted,
and reordered the Tx queue clean-up code in an attempt to avoid transmit
timeouts.
...

I was using version .99b previously, and just downloaded v1.06 source last
night, compiled it, and am now testing. So far no errors, but the proof
will be after many days.

Regards,

 --Scott
