You are seeing the other machines because the Samba box is acting as subnet
master browser. Though this will work for directly connected networks,
other networks behind routers will have problems. This is why you need
a WINS server.
Okay, I should have been clearer from the beginning. Samba is on a network
made up of a single subnet, so there are no PCs behind routers. I am not
the administrator of this network, so I don't want to make samba the
network wins server, and as far as I understand this is not necessary
either. The problem is, I see only PCs belonging to samba's group, not to
other groups (all groups are on the same subnet). But I suspect this is
because the samba server is not using a wins server either. Am I right?
Also.. Samba will work just fine for machines that are privately
addressed. Private addressing only becomes an issue when you are trying
to route this traffic over the Internet. Ifs its an isolated internal
network, don't worry about it.
Well, no, the network is not isolated. The samba server is on a network
which is connected to the Internet. The other private network has private
numbers. And no, I cannot even let them go on the local network, because I
do not administer the router, so other machines on the network wouldn't
know how to speak with the private network. That is why I need
masquerading, right?
