Collisions are normal on an ethernet network. However, the number of
collisions should be proportionally small, compared to the number of
packets sent/received. If the network is a busy one, you should expect
to see a lot of collisions (say, 3-5% of the packet volume). If the
network only has a couple of hosts connected, you should see only an
occasional collision.
If, however, you have one ethernet hub, and you have both your eth0 and
eth1 plugged into that hub, along with your DSL or cablemodem, you will
see a tremendous number of collisions, because your box is trying to
forward packets from one ethernet back onto the same ethernet, which
means a high probability of colliding with the next packet. You should
definitely not run in this configuration. Instead, you should plug your
DSL/Cablemodem directly into your external ethernet, using a cross-
linked cable, which obviates the need for a second hub.
