Hi all,
I'm having a bit of trouble with a Microsoft Exchange Mail server in
conjunction with my linux ip masq/firewall/gateway.
Our current setup is thus:
For explanation purposes... suppose we have 4 machines, named as such:
LINUX
DHCPSERV
EXCHANGESERV
CLIENT
LINUX is a linux firewall/ip masq'ing/internet gateway, running Redhat
Linux 5.2
DHCPSERV is a WinNT (I believe primary domain controller for our NT domain)
EXCHANGESERV is a WinNT server serving Microsoft Exchange
CLIENT is running Windows 95
Before LINUX was added to the picture the CLIENT machine got its IP from
DHCPSERV. It was given an IP and nothing else... not default gateway, no
DNS servers, nothing. In this case the EXCHANGESERV was accessible ffrom
the CLIENT and everything was fine.
Then the LINUX box was setup as an internet gateway. It was also added
on DHCPSERV to tell all clientes to have LINUX as their default gateway
and primary DNS server. This allowed for internet access from all
CLIENTs and worked quite well. They could also still access
the exchange server fine. Unfortunately when one tried to access
the exchange server from CLIENT when the linux machine was down, they got a
server not found error. For some reason it was using LINUX as some sort
of path to get the internal Exchange Server, or more likly, the name of
the exchange server was not being resolved correctly.
I then booted CLIENT with static IP information, including the LINUX
gateway, but not including a DNS server and things appeared to work, even
with LINUX down.
For some reason it appears to not be able to resolve to the exchange
server when DNS is enabled and the LINUX box is not up.
