You said above that:
"tell all clientes to have LINUX as their default gateway and primary DNS
server"
so it seems pretty intuitive that it won't be able to resolve the exchange
box when LINUX is down ... am I missing something here?
If you don't think DNS should be involved in resolving the Exchange
server, try unchecking "Use DNS for windows name resolution"
under Control Panel, Networks. If you're talking to Exchange via
IMAP, I should think it would use DNS anyway. If your talking via
Microsoft proprietarty thingy-protocol, it might or might not use
the Netbios name space (WINS / LMHOSTS) for resolution.
You could set NT up as a secondary DNS, or add a static entry to
the hosts file on each PC (yik :-().
