That may be due to the implementation of the DHCP client.
If you have a static route for 192.168.0.0 on the Linux box, then when
the clients send traffic for 192.168.0.0 to the Linux box (as their
default gateway) the Linux box will send an ICMP redirect, essentially
saying "no, you should be sending that *here*". The client will then
dynamically update its routing table.
To see this in action: reboot a client, run "route print" to display
the routing table, then send a packet to 192.168.x.x, then run "route
print" again. There should now be an entry for 192.168.x.x pointing at
the router.
Alas, it'll only happen on a per-host basis, so the client routing
table will get routes for *each host* on the 192.168.0.0 network,
rather than one route for the entire 192.168.0.0 network.
So the efficiency is there already. Unfortunately this does not remove
the reliance on the Linux box.

communication magnifies stupidity as *efficiently* as it magnifies
intelligence.
