That syntax is wrong, and shouldn't help anything.

Route is expecting an IP address here, not an interface. Your default route
should be the router at the other end of your internet connection, for the
MASQ box. The default gateway for the internal (MASQ'ed) machines should be
the IP address of the inside of your MASQ box.
