Hello Bob,
The simptom you describe seems to me that you don't have DNS properly
setup. Check your /etc/resolv.conf and see if your ISP DNS is set there as
primary nameserver.
All thoses strange things, like getting a login prompt and then *nada* is
related to DNS.
