Give this a shot, I had the same problem did this and it worked:

Changed then to these
Line 15: $temp = $(shell egrep
'^(VERSION|PATCHLEVEL|SUBLEVEL|EXTRAVERSION|ARCH)
'$(KSRC)/Makefile >Makefile.arch)
Line 17: $temp = $(shell egrep -v '^ |^[^ :]*:'
$(KSRC)/arch/$(ARCH)/Makefile >Makefile.arch)
