I'm trying to set up simple masquerading at home:

PC2 <--->  PC1  <--->  Internet
    eth0 sl0

Everything is seemingly working, I can ping Internet sites
from PC2, and I can (mostly) connect to ftp and some irc servers
from PC2.

The gateway, PC1, is running linux-2.1.101

However, it seems that any connection that doesn't maintain a contant
flow of data back 'expires' almost spontaneously. This occurs after
only a very few seconds. I turned on ip_masq_debug, and see the
socket going from ESTABLISHED to FIN_WAIT almost immediately on no
activity. Shortly afterwards I see the connection being expired.

I can mostly connect and login to an ftp server and fire off an
ls and maybe a cd; shortly after this the connection is 'lost'.

In the case of irc, I can only get a connection to very local
servers, anything else is dropped before the startup screens
are displayed (presumably the typical delays seen when connecting
to a typically busy irc deamon mean that something similar is
happening).

All these services function perfectly when run natively on PC1.

Thanks for any light that can be shed on this problem,
