Having changed almost every aspect of my networking and masq setup
I tried switching from SLIP to PPP. This cured the problem immediately.

Is there any inherent reason why Masqing won't work over a SLIP link
as otherwise SLIP has been working flawlessly for many years now ?

works just fine :)
