It's probably not perfectly accurate, but you might just want to try doing
some big FTP transfers between the two machines. The ftp client will
report the transfer rate at the end of each transfer. You also want to
try several different types of data -- highly compressible data like text
should move significantly faster than "dense" types such as JPEGs or
gzip'ed tars.
