Hi Onebear:
I have Squid on my machine at home, and is working like a dream :)
That's what i have done:
Unpacked and installed Squid, was no problem, i followed the examples on
the file itself to configure squid. My server accepts requests on port
8080 and has the autoconfig.pac enabled, so user just have to enter your
web address like this on their proxie address setup (only once):
www.yourserver.com/autoconfig.pac
to get all !!
To get this working you have to add the .pac extension on to the Mime
types on your web server and you have to place the file autoconfig.pac
on the root of your web server (dont forget to configure the
autoconfig.pac file).
Now the ipfwadm doesn't know about the port 8080 and your machine
doesn't aswell. You have to place an entry on your /etc/services file,
so you can configure the ipfwadm with the right port and service, after
all that, run the squid in demon mode without dns lookups.
On the squid site look at the FAQ they have a lot of questions and
answers for the most commom problems.

Good luck
