It varies within the US, too. In my area, Denver, Colorado, there
are few high-speed options. The cable-tv companies are just now
starting to offer cablemodem service, and the phone company is
totally mis-managing its ADSL offering.
I'm just now ordering ISDN service, which costs a flat $65.00 per
month. It will still be dial-up, as my ISP wants $250.00 a month for
a full-time connection. It will be a great relief, though, to get
rid of diald and the complicated sendmail configurations needed to
queue and deliver outgoing mail. The ISDN circuit will replace 2
existing analog phone lines, so the cost increase will be minor.
