-Somerville FD also averages four men per company. Here's a roster for that dept., showing company assignments: http://www.somervillelocal76.org/?zone=/unionactive/view_article.cfm&HomeID=12910
Most Somerville companies have four (1 Officer 3 Firemen). A few have three (1 Officer 2 Firemen). And a few have five (1 Officer 4 Firemen), but it averages out to four per company. -Boston has a minimum of four (1 officer 3 firemen) on most Engines and Ladders. Tower Ladders and Rescues have a minimum of five (1 Officer 4 firemen), but I'm not sure the city always follows that requirement, so some companies might end up understaffed -Lawrence, under fire safety standards, probably should have 5-6 men per rig as it is a "high-risk" area for fires. Nationally accepted safety standards call for 4 men per rig. However, the same standards say there should be 5-6 men per company in high-risk areas for fire- FDNY has 5-6/company staffing city-wide because it's a high-risk area, Lawrence probably is as well. -Cambridge must have at least 4 men per company, as they are a Class 1 dept., and they need to meet all standards, including minimum staffing, to be Class 1. Also, some areas of Cambridge are probably considered high-risk for fires, so some Cambridge companies must have 5-6 men. -Does Medford have 4-man staffing per rig? I think it's likely that at least some of their companies have four men (ladders at a minimum), and possibly all do.
