" How to handle radio system failures - a guide for dispatchers "

1. If you use a trunked system, good luck. I am sure that there are
many many many things that can go wrong with a trunked radio system.
Typical recovery options are - switch to a secondary trunked system -
switch to a conventional channel - switch to a portable radio -
reconfigure the system - go to FailSoft - activate a temporary trunked
system - switch to direct ops with relays - use cellphones - use
Mobile Data Computers - etc

2. If you use a conventional simplex (1 frequency) system - you can
switch to a portable radio, and hope that a mobile radio can hear you,
and relay the message to other units. You can even go out into the
parking lot and use a mobile radio in one of the parked cruisers. Less
flamboyant options - switch to a backup base station - ask some other
dispatcher on the freq to relay your messages to your field units.

3. If you use a repeater system - many things can go wrong. Typical
back up options include : go to direct ops - activate secondary
repeaters - use a portable radio - install a secondary repeater - etc

Bottom line - if you don't test your backup options weekly - and if
you don't have a ham radio operator helping you out on a regular basis
- then you are probably not providing very good service to your
community.
