I'm not sure. I appreciate the acknowledgement, and your cautious approach toward changing mpl. I see some benefit in the new config package, even without traits. If we wanted, I think we could modify it so it doesnt depend on traits, but traits could be added in the future. The addition of traits would only happen after the transforms branch has had time to settle. At that time, if we feel like we still need convincing that this is the right thing to do, we can create a traits branch and see how things pan out. By the time we are ready to roll out the final product, maybe everybody will be converting to py3k and we'll have a whole new can of worms to consider.
