Karl, Unfortunately, the 3D support in matplotlib is not actively maintained. We included it in the distribution in hopes that we could rope someone who has time and interest into supporting and extending it, but this has not happened yet. So I'm afraid you may have to be the one to do the digging on this issue if you have the time and inclination. If you find a fix, please send us a patch.
