Unfortunately, I'm not able to reproduce this bug on RHEL 4. Valgrind (a memory checking tool) doesn't come up with any clues.
You could try setting your backend to simply "Agg" to rule out some Tk usage/installation problem as the culprit. Other than that, I'm stumped, but maybe one of the Leopard users on this list has more insight.
