Mike -- thanks for your response. I thought I had tried this and it didn't 
work. I guess I didn't!!!!  I just tried the following equivalent approach:

ML.rcParams['font.family'] = 'serif'
ML.rcParams['font.serif'] = ['Cambria Math'] + ML.rcParams['font.serif']

and it worked like a charm.
