I don't know if this will help, but... Python packages generally don't have proper dependency management when building. That means, if an underlying dependency changes, it often doesn't rebuild enough to keep things in sync. You may want to try rebuilding everything after first completely removing the "build" directory to force a complete rebuild. Do numpy first then matplotlib.
...but maybe you've tried that already, in which case, I don't know off hand...
