One thing that I've noticed is that the play button is presented before the playback is actually ready. If I get a bit trigger happy and click the play button before the duration of capture clock changes from 00:00:00 to the actual calculated duration of the capture, I end up experiencing some of the elements that you describe. The playback is much more reliable if I wait to press the play button until after the clock changes to the actual calculated duration.
