At 1.5-2m, one could be enough to pick up everything, but I find the issue isn't so much volume as dynamic range-if some people are much closer to the single mic than others, you will need to rebalance the audio electronically or the audio will be hard to follow.
We recently outfitted a conference room that seats 15 at a long table with two PZM-11s and a stereo preamp-with good results. Is it good enough to install just one PZM microphone, placed on the console close to the speaker in about 1.5-2m range? Or you would definitely recommend more than one? Here is what they told me: "Well......I'd like to retract my favorable comment about the Voice Tracker mics. We got excited about them when we first got them, but we learned later on that they have a background sound like a babbling brook. In other words they do ok picking up questions from the students if you're willing to put up with the babbling brook sound. So, as of this date we have removed them from our classrooms and gone back to PZMs." At our school, we use a combination of PZMs (most are the Crown PZM-11 variety) and wireless microphones. Three ceiling-mounted (height of around 16 feet) PZMs can pick up any normal voice in a room of approximately 20x40 feet, and I use some compression in post processing to equalize loud and quiet voices. Therefore I have just started looking for a permanently installed type of 'array of microphones'. And after a quick search on the web I have found this: http://www.acousticmagic.com/voice-tracker-array-microphone-technology.html So I wonder whether somebody is using such equipment or perhaps something similar? It would be also interesting to know, what types of microphones people use?
