Thank you Judy, it's very useful.

I'd only add one observation to the out-of-the-box roles behavior, but expect 
who played with the Series must know about it.
The thing is when you edit the default Series and then re-start the system, all 
editing will be cleared or reset to the default setup (but any new Series 
created by admin will stay intact). 
This is because of the setup in the config. properties
           org.opencastproject.security.demo.loadusers = true

Therefore to re-tain your changes in Series, this must set to it 'false' 
immediate after the first re-boot.
I don't whether there is any better solution?

I did try this in the config. properties (on rel 1.3) , but still I can't see 
the Users tab?
