While I can't speak for Alex, there is no documentation that I know of
that explains what matterhorn is storing in its data directory and
ultimately what needs to be kept and what doesn't. Matterhorn produces
a lot of temp files when performing its operations, some of which I am
certain can be deleted. But which ones?
Likewise when performing backups, what do we need to make sure is kept,
what can be thrown away?

Alex,
It seems the developers feel uneasy when the users are
deleting/retracting recordings. I feel more uneasy about telling
people they need to buy more storage and backup resources because
storage management in Matterhorn is ridiculously hard to accomplish.
I'm not sure how much help I can be, but what are you trying to
accomplish that you can't? Is it with working files that your storage
is filling up, or with the Engage server? I assume the latter?
