If you end up doing this project you *probably* won't need much Java so I would not be concerned about that. An example of the current state of this project can be found at http://testca.usask.ca:8080/capture/index.html (username: admin, password: opencast). As you can see it's really simple, so if this is the project you want to do you should start thinking about how to make that UI jive with the one at http://testadmin.usask.ca:8080 (same username and password as above).
