Brian, did you install Matterhorn as a service? That part of the documentation is likely outdated, as Jaime Hodge left this part of the documentation and nobody contributed to it so far.
A "patch" to the docs is always welcome, and yes, the install docs shold be and actually *are* updated with every release. It seems though that the Mac OS X service part is constantly neglected.
