Nit pickery: it's X or The X Windowing System. 

Other stuff: If you don't like the "bloat" of what comes with most Linux 
distros, don't run it. NetBSD and the like don't typically come with things
like KDE or Gnome - they usually come with fvwm2 or something like that. Run 
fvwm instead of KDE/Gnome on Linux...
