This may not be the best way to go about it, but I boot LinuxPPC by using
another small partition that has YaBoot on it. What I did is make a small
(~50 MB) partition in the HFS format.
You will find a sort of a fake system folder on your LinuxPPC installer CD,
which is what it uses to start up LinuxPPC. I copied this and the Linux
Kernels folder to the new parttion. Now if you open the partition you
should see two folders:
Linux Kernels and System Folder
In System Folder you should have:
Finder, Preferences, README, System, yaboot, yaboot.conf
Other installations (based on your version) may vary but in the Linux
Kernels folder there should be something like this:
vmlinux_2.2.17pre20-ben3, vmlinux-2.2.18_SMP, vmlinux-2.2.18-4hpmac,
vmlinux-2.2.18pre24-install, vmlinux-pmac-2.2.18-4hBOOT
Next, I opened the vmlinux_2.2.17pre20-ben3
vmlinux-2.2.18_SMP
vmlinux-2.2.18-4hpmac
vmlinux-2.2.18pre24-install
vmlinux-pmac-2.2.18-4hBOOT
Next, I opened the yaboo.conf file (in the "fake" system folder) and
edited it to have a different default bootup configuration. You do this
by editing the "default" line near the top of the text file. Instead of
using the Install configuration, that line in my file is:
default = Boot LinuxPPC -- Accelerated video
That's about it. You can see if it worked by selecting that partition in
your Startup Disk control panel. To get back to OS 9 or X (whatever you
use) hold down the option key at boot so you can select your normal
partition. If for some reason that doesn't work, boot from your computer'
s install CD and then select your normal partition with the Startup Disk
control panel.
I hope this is helpful and was not too confusing. If you have any
questions about what I said, please ask.
Thanks,
David
