I am planning on installing Debian m68k Linux on a Macintosh Quadra 800 with 40
megs of RAM and a 260 meg hard disk. I hope to add a 200 meg external hard disk
later. I also have an old 20 meg hard disk which I might be able to use as a MacOS
startup disk if I do a really lean installation of 7.5.3. My eventual goal is to
set up this machine for web browsing, word processing and spreadsheets, and games.
I am currently waiting for the Debian compact discs I've ordered to arrive.

My problem has to do with partitions.

First, I can't seem to find appropriate software for partitioning the hard disk.
I have Apple HD SC Setup 3.0.1 (A/UX) which will create Unix partitions, but it
only creates partitions of equal size. I can divide the disk into two 130 meg
partitions or four 65 meg partitions and so forth, but I can't divide it into (for
example) a 60 meg swap partition, a 30 meg MacOS partition and a 170 meg storage
partition. The regular Mac hard disk set-up software doesn't create Unix
partitions at all. I have FWB toolkit 2.0.1, but it's the PE edition which won't
create Unix partitions. Bear in mind that money is a factor here. I'm trying to do
this project on a budget of $0.00, not including the cost of the Debian compact
discs I've already ordered. Buying expensive new software for this project would
sort of go against the spirit of the thing.

I understand there is a patch that will allow the standard Apple hard disk setup
software to create Unix partitions, but I have only the vaguest idea of what
ResEdit even is, let alone how to use it. Frankly, I'm the sort of person who
tends to faint at the sight of raw computer code.

So I guess what I'm asking is, how can I acquire the software necessary to create
the needed Unix paritions on my drive(s) at no or very minimal expense?
