I recently installed YDL 2.3 (default developer package) on a
G3-upgraded PowerCenter Pro. Everything seems fine, except that I
can't reliably start KDE or Gnome. The machine freezes near the end
of the initialization process, just before the desktop comes up.
There's what looks like a very small CD icon pasted on the screen near
the mouse pointer, then nothing responds. It doesn't seem to matter
whether I use a graphical login, or text login followed by startx.

I do seem to be able to consistently start the desktop if I'm logged
in as root, which I guess should be a significant clue. Otherwise,
I've only had one success starting KDE from my regular user account,
and I don't know what was different that time. Does anyone have an
idea what is likely to be going wrong, here? I'm pretty technically
capable, but I'm a newbie with this system, so I don't really know
where to start.

Thanks.
