Pentium 3 700 MHz, RH 8 - main webserver Pentium 2 300 MHz, RH 8 - web development server Pentium 1 166 MHz, RH9 - prepress print spooler 9600 300 MHz, YDL 2.3 - mail and print spooler 9600 300 MHz, YDL 2.3 - firewall, DNS, and outside mail server G4 400 MHz, ASIP G4 400 MHz, ASIP and OPI Interestingly, I just got out of a software vendor meeting where they asked if we used Novell or Windows networking. Disbelief when I said neither, replaced by shock when I mentioned Linux ;) We used a O2 R10000 175 MHz for our main outside webserver until the P3 took over. We also ran Canto Cumulus Workgroup on that machine, util the memory leaks in it bit us. We ran Maya on a O2 R10000 225 MHz until we moved to Win2K for Maya. We also ran Heidelberg DaVinci on a O2 RM5400 300 MHz until that software was EOL. We have run a SGI 4D 320 GTX and a Indigo2 Extreme for some applications. The 4D 320 is a coffee table in our lobby now. It's a test of computer knowledge for techies that come in ;) >Irix is a bit nasty and bloated for my liking (not to >mention expensive...) but I haven't really tried linux on the SGIs yet. I have never tried Linux on SGI hardware. Slow is slow no matter what OS runs on it. The 4D 320 had dual 33 MHz processors, the Indigo2 had a 150 MHz. I did not load the windowing environment on IRIX for the webserver. If I needed it, I would ssh in and start it up, then shut it down when done. Software availablity for IRIX is iffy or expensive though. Once Sun bought the Netscape servers, no more Enterprise Server (or the iPlanet equal) for IRIX. For Open Source software to really work well, it needs to be compiled by the SGI MIPS Pro compiler ($$$), which can get nasty as most config scripts are made for gcc, which produced slow code on IRIX. I haven't tried a 3.x version of gcc on IRIX, so that may have changed. Personally, I find the IRIX desktop environment the best of all *NIX systems, save OS X. I really like inst and the Software Manager, it beats the pants off of Windows Update and OS X Software Update. But I actually _like_ rpm, so count me as a weird one. -- Charles Dostale [EMAIL PROTECTED] System Administrator, Silver Oaks Communications http://www.silveroaks.com 824 17th Street, Moline IL USA 61265 309-797-9898 -- MaX-list is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and... / Buy books, CDs, videos, and more from Amazon.com \ / <http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect-home/lowendmac> \ Support Low End Mac <http://lowendmac.com/lists/support.html> MaX-list info: <http://lowendmac.com/linux/max.shtml> --> AOL users, remove "mailto:" Send list messages to: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To unsubscribe, email: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> For digest mode, email: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subscription questions: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Archive: <http://www.mail-archive.com/max-list%40mail.maclaunch.com/> Using a Mac?
