I don't remember the exact answer, but the place to start looking is
the fbset command.  You'll need to adjust the XF86Conf file, and I
think yellowdog has a command to try different frame buffer settings
for X- it could be xfconfig, or something similar.

There might be a fbset call in the /etc/rc.d/ directories- you might
want to grep for it.
